he Poet Who Put His Own Heart on Trial

دلِ ناداں تجھے ہوا کیا ہے
آخر اس درد کی دوا کیا ہے

Everybody sings Ghalib’s “Dil-e-nadan.” Almost nobody asks what he was really doing when he wrote it. This is an attempt to answer — and the answer is stranger than the song.

You have heard it at a wedding. You have heard it at two in the morning in Mehdi Hassan’s voice, when the city is asleep and the heart is not. Dil-e-nadan tujhe hua kya hai — O naive heart, what has happened to you? It may be the most sung sher in the Urdu-speaking world.

Now let me tell you something no singer will tell you. No scholar on this earth can tell you when Ghalib wrote it. Or why. Or for whom.
