Kaisa bewakoof tha main jo chala tha rooh ko likhne,
Socha hi na tha ke toot jayenge duniya ke qalam saare,
Bhejta hai Khuda apna Noor rooh ki surat mein,
Aur le leta hai wapas zindagi ke imtehan ke baad.

Critical nuances, poetic imagery and philosophical themes
Rooh Noor hai — the soul is God's Light, held as a trust (amanat).
To write is to bind a thing within limits; the soul is limitless — so every pen breaks. A pen is made of earth; how can earth write Light? The Qur'an says the soul is of the Command of my Lord — a command cannot be written by a pen, it can only be felt by a heart. And the soul was never ours: God sends His Light in the form of the soul, and takes His trust back when life's examination ends.
